Why Young?  Why Professionals?

I’ve been asked this question multiple times by people in and outside the YP movement.  Here are the most common concerns:

  • “Young” is an ageist term that excludes those who are no longer under-40 or under-35, and are still committed to the kind of impact YPOs are committed to in their communities.
  • “Professional” is a word that excludes artists, musicians, actors, teachers, and the core creative class.

When I think back to the revolution in the 60’s and 70’s, it was students - America’s young - who led those movements.  Others joined, but the word “Student” or “Youth” was central to many organizations.

Generally, I advise that if the term is causing exclusion rather than inclusion, it’s not serving you well.  In addition, if you’re tripping over words, you may need different words.

What do you think?  Does the term “young professional” serve the YP movement?
