Alec Loorz: iMatter from Bioneers on Vimeo.
Have you ever met someone who is so focused, energetic, and effective that you felt like you were standing still in comparison?
Has that person ever been 16 years old?
Meet Alec Loorz, the accidental kingpin of a youth-led youth green revolution. Here's how it went down.
When Alec first saw “An Inconvenient Truth” at age 12, he was so moved he applied to be one of Al Gore’s presenters, but was rejected because of his age. Instead of waiting to “grow up,” Alec created his own thing -- Kids vs Global Warming. In the past 4 years Alec has emerged as one of the most powerful young leaders of the environmental movement. He has presented to thousands of folks, including members of the US Senate.
I was introduced to Alec at Badger Bioneers, where we saw a video of his presentation at the national conference. His remarks were brief, energizing, and inspiring. This kid is working his tail off to fulfill his vision. Get this: in his lifetime, he wants to stop global warming.
According to Alec, it’s his calling. “I realize that climate change is going to affect my generation most, and I feel that we, as youth, need to do everything we can to solve this crisis, before anyone can tell us it’s impossible.”
You don’t have to be in high school to support Alec's work. The iMatterMarch starts tomorrow. If you want to march go here and enter your zipcode to find a march near you.
“I’m always impressed with what young people can do before older people tell them it’s impossible.” - David Brower
