Live First, Work Second - A motto all YPOs can live by!

I was one of the lucky ones who got an advanced copy of Rebecca Ryan’s new book - Live First, Work Second (LFWS) . I read it immediately, but since then have picked it up many times for references and to help recall some of the stories Rebecca shares.

This morning I picked it up as I was thinking about how Young Professionals Organizations (YPOs) can better build their VALUE CASE in their communities - particularly with the establishment and the PMS (Pale, Male, and Stale - as described in the book).  Well, I feel Chapter Two in LFWS offers a great framework for YPOs to build their VALUE CASE around “Three Truths and a Lie in Your Community.”

  • Truth #1: The Knowledge Economy doesn’t play by the old rules of economic development

The next generation first picks a place to live and then looks for work. Therefore community leaders need to understand it takes more than announcing 1000 new jobs in your               community to attract young talent!  What value can a YPO bring to this truth?

  • Truth #2: Cities are for people

YPOs can and must help the establishment understand what young talent want.  Help them prioritize between a new shopping center outside of town or a people centered stroll district that can revitalize downtown!  Is your YPO offering this kind of value in your community?

  • Lie: The next generation is lazy and apathetic

We have all heard this, and the next time you do just say, “I’m connected with nearly 300 YPOs throughout the world representing nearly 1M next generation leaders that would beg to differ.”  YPOs create impact in a new way, different from the established civic organizations.

  • Truth #3: Cool Communities work together and play to win

And it’s the Cool Communities who have an engaged and welcomed young talent base - one that is looked to for their insight and intelligence.  That’s YOU!

The third truth Rebecca shares with us is my favorite, and in my experience, it’s where most communities fail in their talent attraction and retention initiatives.  Why?  Because they are not listening for the YP voice and reaching out to their YPOs to help and lead their communities’ future developement.  Those cities that are engaging the next generation are gaining big!  Look at Nashville, Cleveland, and Milwaukee to name a few.

As a founder of a YPO I encourage all YPO leaders to pick up a copy of Live First, Work Second , which I believe is a motto most YPOs can live by.

How are you building your YPO’s value case?  Share here…
