(Regina, SK) When you hear the same thing - a song, a book title, a comment or complaint - over and over again from different sources, do you think it’s coincidence…or serendipity?
I used to be a member of the Coincidence Camp. But I lost a few opportunities that I should have paid more attention to, so now I adhere to the Rule of Three: when I hear something repeated three times, I look into it further. I’m just suspicious enough to believe that the Universe may be tapping me on the shoulder to tell me something.
Yesterday I heard the same theme from three different people: Leadership.
- Rod Frantz, formerly with the Richard Florida Creativity Group, and I talked about - what seems like - a leadership glut in the U.S.
- A leader of a public accounting firm asked me how to tap their firm’s emerging leaders to solve a major challenge facing their firm.
- Bryan Derreberry from the Wichita Chamber of Commerce asked me during a recorded podcast what his region’s leaders could do to attract and engage the next generation of leaders.
Did I need a fourth messenger? The Universe knows I’m thick-headed. As I headed to catch my flight to Regina last night, I swung by the airport bookstore. (I love the Read and Return program available at Paradies Gift Stores in Madison’s and other select airports.) Lee Iacocca’s face greeted me from the cover of his new book, Where Have All the Leaders Gone? (excerpt ).
What do you think is the state of leadership in our country? Our world?
