Is Twitter King?

The New York Times calls Twitter the "social networking site of the moment" in the Tweet Smell of Success.

What I'm finding so interesting about Twitter is how it's being used.  For those of you new to Twitter "it's a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"

However it's being used for some heavy users as a replacement and/or comingling to text messaging as a way to stay in touch with friends and/or fans. It's being used for public figures to let their fans know a little bit or A LOT about their private lives and for more private folks to allow a few things to go public. It's also being used to create revolutions like the one Iran surrounding the presidential elections - See the details of the story for more.

I'm a new user and most of us at NGC are, except for our early adopter teammate, Rebecca.  She's been tweeting since the first of the year. In the social networking sphere, I skipped Facebook, yet embrace Twitter.  I like the limit of 140 characters or less as most people are full of hot air. The character limit causes some to be clever and thoughtful with word choice.

At NGC we're using it to announce some big events, like launching our Next Cities list of 60 hot spots for young professionals, and we're also providing our followers some behind the scenes happenings.  Some businesses are using it to build fans and provide sneak peeks to new products or services.

For example, I just learned moments ago from Sarah "Intellagirl" Robbins about a new app called Tweetdeck. I installed it and began using it immediately. The other interesting thing about Twitter is the number of apps that are being designed to enhance the user experience as users continue to push the functionality further.

What are your thoughts on Twitter and how are you using it?
