It’s tough out there for graduating Millennials. A scary StatsCan report has shown the unemployment rate among Canadian youth has risen to nearly 15%. A full third of 18-29 year-olds have apparently - gasp! - cut back or cancelled their cellphone accounts.
I could say a lot of things about the importance of companies continuing to think about attracting and retaining young talent, even now. But instead, I’m going to call out Gen Y on this one.
Honestly, I’m not sure that this is the best way to respond to the challenge of graduating in an economic downturn. There are lots of things that demonstrate commitment, drive, and ambition. Volunteering, for one. Starting a business, for another. Or even - gasp, again! - continuing to pound the pavement and market oneself. I don’t believe that a period of ‘funemployment’ on one’s resume is going to reflect well in a few years.
