Downtown is Dead After Five - What to Do?

If you live in a city that “dies” after 5, you’re not alone.  We’ve heard this concern from many young and emerging professionals, who bemoan their After Hours scene.  They talk about driving an hour or more to other cities to buy their organic groceries, furniture, clothes and appliances.

The YPs in Hutchinson, KS had a great idea to raise awareness with local merchants: coordinate a day (or a weekend) when every YP travels with those giant post-it notes and a marker to the local retailers that would’ve gotten their business, if they’d been open.  Your handwritten note could simply say,

“I was here on [date] willing to spend [$amount] on [items] at your store. Sorry you weren’t open.”

The visual impact of all those bright post-its on shop doors would draw a few stares. Bonus points if your YPs document the notes with photographs, and a blog post or letter to the editor of the local newspaper.

Dollars spent locally circulate in your economy up to seven times.  What are your local retailers missing by not staying open at times when YPs want to shop?
