I love Madison. The scale is just right (bike lanes and bike paths, big brains coming through town to lecture, max commute times = 25 minutes) and Madison has the amenities I use and enjoy. Yesterday is a fine example. It’s like a slice of life in my Next City…
It all started when my super talented pal Jodi Cohen and I agreed to take our dogs to the dog park. It was only six degrees, but the sun was brilliant and we had made the time. But which dog park? We discussed four different options before settling on one (I’ve heard rumors that Madison has more dogs than children, and we have the parks to back it up).
After our walk - when the dogs were pooped and our cheeks were numb - we looked at each other and asked, “Lunch?” We gabbed about options and decided on Pasqual’s, a locally owned Mexican restaurant.
When we got out of the car, Jodi said, “You know, there’s a great Indian restaurant around the block…”
I sniffed the air. Mmmm, curry.
Jodi prompted, “They have a great lunch buffet.”
Done.
We crossed the street and walked two blocks. On the way, we passed Michael’s, a local burger and custard shop, a bakery, and a tiny Polish deli.
After lunch, as I walked back to my car, I thought of how lucky I am to live in Madison. My dogs are welcomed here. Our restaurant scene is thick with options and diverse in its breadth. It proves why the banners on the lamp posts on Willy Street say, “Madison - A Place for All People.”
