Chop wood. Carry water.

Millennials (b. 1982-2002) often feel paralyzed by the number of options they have for careers.  Indeed, some high school guidance counselors tell seniors not to worry what career they THINK they want to have, because by the time that 18 year old turns 20 or 22, even more occupations will be invented, further muddying their options.  In addition to the number of options, many Millennials report feeling frightened that they’ll make the WRONG choice… and then have to suffer through the rest of their career.

We need to reassure our next great generation that there’s no ONE right way… or right career.  There are many paths.  The important thing is to do something… and that “something” will lead to great internal discovery.  As the Zen Buddhists say, “Chop wood.  Carry water.”  Just do the next thing in your path… and your path will become clearer.
