What’s your QT?

If you live in Austin, TX you know about the QT Festival, a movie celebration centered on director Quentin Tarantino. QT made his name in Tinsel Town with the Gen X/cult classics Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. The QT Festival is directed solely by – you guessed it – the ever-noir, Quentin Tarantino. (No romantic comedies here.)

Move over, Sundance. Missoula, Montana has two movie festivals each year and Telluride, Colorado rings in with three. The most creative movie festival goes to Philly, which plays host to the Reject Festival and films that get no respect elsewhere.

Are film festivals tied to economic development? Yes, in two ways. First, imagine a gaggle of Hollywood types and their adoring – if underground – fans, paying mucho dinero to come and play in your town for a long weekend. Is there a better way to showcase your Third Spaces or local culture?

Second, movie festivals put your city on the short list of cool communities that get noticed by underground, connected types, like independent film goers.

What your QT Festival? Is it putting you on the talent map?
