We do it because if we don't, who will? We do it because we feel called to serve a purpose bigger than ourselves. We do it because some passionate people in our community are already doing it and we've caught the bug. We do it because we inherited the job and want to make the best of it. We do it because we've seen what communities can – and should – be.
We salute you. And we know that despite your best intentions and thoughtful planning, shift happens. A new mayor is elected – without a ticket for the Cluetrain. Or your child gets cancer and you take a leave of absence. "Life is what happens when you're planning other things."
Face it. The puppies are never born in the basket or on time. Newborns don't read "What to Expect When You're Expecting." Community building efforts get side-tracked, downplayed, and sometimes buried.
But that doesn't make the task less important, or your calling less real. When the puppies arrive– all over the carpet in the middle of the night – you deal with it and move on.
