Communities have connective tissue, too. Our neighborhoods, service clubs, block parties and festivals are the ligaments that keep us connected to each other and to our shared sense of what it means to be a member of our community.
How strong is your connection to your community? Give yourself one point for each “Yes” to the following questions:
- I know the names of all my neighbors.
- I’ve had a conversation with a neighbor that’s lasted more than 15 seconds in the past week.
- I have many close friends in town, whom I see regularly.
- I am an important part of a community organization outside of work, and have done volunteer work for them in the past two months.
How’d you do? The higher your score, the more important your role is in the connective tissue of your community. Each of your Yes’s are “sticky points,” cartilage that connects you – and the people you know – to your communities. The more sticky points you and your neighbors have, the stronger your system – your city - is.
Now ask, How can we create stronger connective tissue in our community?
