Last week we touted "The Rural Advantage" for Gen X'ers who don't take kindly to The Big City. This week we're going to expose you (aack!) to one of the new Cool Communities indexes under development here at the Hot Jobs – Cool Communities HQ.

The "Earning & Learning Index" was born out of Gen X'ers response to the question: "What makes a community cool?" Young talent say that they're looking for breadth AND depth of occupational and lifelong learning options. Remember: the career ladder is dead. The career web is in. Rather than work their fannies off for one organization to get the gold watch and corner office, today's young talent expect to move among organizations, strengthening and expanding their skills and plugging into continued education as needed.

This fluid, dynamic connection between Earning and Learning is deeply encoded into Gen X'ers. Communities with a deep bench of both Earning and Learning opportunities attract young talent.
