GenXers from recent focus groups across the state of Iowa say that this "balancing act" of communities is indeed vital – communities that are talent magnets are offering young talent truly affordable living in the heart of the city, where there is a boat load of choices, and good communication about what is going on both 9-5 and after hours. And as young talent begins to mature (the ripe old age of 30 something...) and maybe settle into a more family-oriented lifestyle, successful communities are helping young parents transition into their new roles, while still offering adult work and play connections. For example, in Des Moines, young talent with and without children, shared an appreciation of condensed community activities – festivals and family places, outdoor cafes, locally owned grocery stores, all with longer hours to meet varying schedules – and all within a walkable distance.
Less is not always more - more (options) can be more (attractive to young talent). But, since not all communities can be all things to all people, it really is about balance.
