1. Host a Thank You lunch. Pizza is okay. Give Thanksgiving themed awards like, "Most Thankless Job," "Department of Turkeys" "Employee who laid the biggest egg." Make sure everyone gets an off-the-wall award.
2. Happy Hour is a precious event for most Gen X'ers. Host one. Serve the beer yourself to make sure you see every staffer to thank them for their work. Make the praise as specific to their contributions as possible.
3. Wear a turkey costume to work the week before Thanksgiving and hand out personalized – that means you wrote them, not mail merged them – thank you notes to everyone on your team.
4. Host a Nintendo tournament in the company's staff lounge. (Thanks to Discover Financial Services in AZ for that idea!)
5. Beginning in early November, accept nomination for Thanksgiving themed awards. (See #2 above, and let employees invent their own categories.) Then open the ballots to all employees. Give the awards the day before Thanksgiving vacation.
6. Take the team to a pumpkin patch for an afternoon of pumpkin carving. Give awards for the pumpkins that are most unique, best self-portrait, scariest, and most likely to get a seat on the company's board of directors, plus other awards that you invent!
7. Hire a massage therapist to do chair massages for all interested staff.
8. Hire a stand up comedian or Improv group to perform customized humor for your organization.
