And now from the slightly off center and deliberately irreverent...

God bless ‘em. The editorial staff, that is. We're going to try something for a while. Political commentary done in character. Think of Stewart and Colbert. We know there is 60% of the electorate who wouldn't change their minds, no matter what. On one side they want to know how old the President was when he was born in Africa. On the other, they are convinced it's all over when the Mayan calendar runs out of pages.

We're aiming for you folks out there in the middle. We would like to introduce you to the "mouth of the middle," Buford T. Hogslop.

Our resident troublemaker is based ever so loosely on the radio show character "Earl Pitts," i.e. "Wake up ‘Uhmerika!'"

However, our legal-eagle friends who have miraculously managed to avoid being peppered with bird shot (which is another whole rant on why booze and bullets don't mix, but we ain't goin' there either) inform us that we need to rely on a different character to avoid being dragged into court. So from now on, our resident burgundy-neck will be known as Buford T. Hogslop.

Buford lives in a small town in the Southwest that was visited by aliens. Repeatedly. Aunt Agnes still stands out on the porch, looking skyward and saying, "My, wasn't that a nice spring evening." Who knows, but she smiles a lot...
