  • 2:15 - 3:15 PM: Opening Keynote: Selling Pixie Dust to New Generations by Faron Kelley

How do you craft an experience that is always fresh, deepens your relationship with your fans, and keeps them, their friends and family coming back again and again? Disney is a world leader in creating those experiences, and Faron Kelley in his role as Director of Marketing for Disney Parks plays a key role in designing them.  In the last ten years, Faron and his team have rebuilt the Disney experience to start twelve months before guests enter the park, and build in excitement as their visit nears.  Faron's remarks will help us rethink how to build value and excitement for our audiences, before they even enter our venues.

  • 3:15 - 3:45 PM: Sell-Out in 11 Minutes: How IndyHub Helps Local Arts Organizations Reach Young Professionals by Molly Chavers. IndyHub, Indianapolis' largest Young Professionals Organization, connects the city's up-and-comers to a range of causes and organizations. Molly Chavers, IndyHub's Executive Director, will talk about the exciting collaborations they've had with local arts organizations, and offer ideas for how you can engage young professionals in your community.

From 4:00 - 5:00 PM Summit participants may participate in one of the following:

  • Tour the Children's Museum Archives. Join the Children's Museum staff for a behind-the-scenes tour of its artifacts and collection.

  • Learn how the Children's Museum Designs Exhibits. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the world's largest children's museum, and has done an extraordinary job of threading Learning, Sensing, and Connecting throughout the creation and execution of exhibits. [At the 2007 Summit, participants learned that Learning, Connecting and Sensing are the top three experiences that 20-40 year old patrons want from their art and cultural experience.] Learn from Children's Museum staff how they curate experiences, not just exhibits.

  • 9:00 - 10:00 AM:  Uncharitable:  How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential by Dan Pallotta

Dan Pallotta's new book Uncharitable, goes where no other work on the nonprofit sector has dared to tread.  Where other books suggest ways to optimize performance within the existing nonprofit paradigm, Uncharitable suggests that the paradigm itself is the problem and calls into question our most fundamental canons about charity.  Dan is the founder of Pallotta TeamWorks, which invented the AIDS Rides and the Breast Cancer 3-Days. 182,000 people participated in these epic, grueling pilgrimages, and raised $556 million - more money raised more quickly for these causes than any private event operation in history.

  • 10:15 - 11:00 AM and 11:15 - 12:00 PM: Best Practice Sessions

Session 1: Brand Makeover: How the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Retooled for Next Gen Patrons by Mark Newman, Vice President of Marketing & Communications, The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has focused on engaging the next generation of concert attendees through an aggressive Brand Makeover Strategy.  Their strategy features an extensive social media platform, the addition of robust technology, refreshed programming and a series of unique networking events. The makeover has enabled the ISO to successfully multiply its touchpoints with the marketplace, build new relationships, cultivate a loyal following of new and diverse patrons, effectively influence word of mouth promotion, engage and excite concert attendees, and sell tickets.

Session 2: Making Art Accessible to New Audiences: The New Audience Road Show by Katie Fox, Program Director, Arts Education, S.C. Artists' Ventures Initiative, South Carolina Arts Commission

The South Carolina Arts Commission is in its third year of Columbia's New Audience Road Show. The Road Show introduces young professionals - who are intimidated by arts and culture - to five local arts organizations through a sampler package. Columbia's sampler package is unlike any other because the "roadies" get two behind-the-scenes tours before the ticketed event to learn both the how and why of the created piece of art, most often from the artistic director.  Learn how Katie's program is creating loyal patrons, volunteers, and board members of the arts and how arts organizations are changing their programming to appeal to a younger audience.

  • 12:00 - 12:45 PM: Lunch in Clowes Sculpture Court at the Eiteljorg (outdoor options weather permitting)
  • 1:00 - 2:00 PM: Creating Authentic Connections: Using Social Media to Create, Motivate and Engage Your Community by Sarah "Intellagirl" Robbinsinstatemuseum

Arts organizations need evangelists, people willing to pass along the message of their value, culture, and importance. However, with limited time and even more limited budgets, it's difficult to spread the word. Social media to the rescue! Using today's social networks, blogs, microblogs, virtual worlds and more, arts organizations can efficiently market their services, and arm a community of evangelists to help spread the word in an authentic and measurable way. This presentation will introduce the basic concepts of social media, the most popular tools, and the strategies you need to get the ball rolling for your organization.

  • 2:15 - 3:00 PM & 3:15 - 4:00 PM: Best Practice sessions(Select 2)

Option 1: Hands-on Web 2.0 by Sarah Robbins (2:15 to 3:00 PM only)

Roll-up your sleeves, open your laptops and turn on your mobile phone!  In this interactive session, Sarah "Intellagirl" Robbins offers you expert and hands-on advice. You'll learn how to use the technology tools Sarah talked about in her keynote, in a safe environment where no question is a silly question!  Learn how to Twitter without being a twit.  Learn how to make De.li.cious bookmarks.  Find out what 'kids today' are doing online, and how you can join their conversation.

Option 2: "My Website Said What?" by Joshua Lingenfelter, Director of Marketing at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University

For many of us, our websites are the most important piece of branding we have. We spend countless hours tweaking graphics, navigation and text. However, we often do not consider what our websites are telling us about how our patrons utilize the website and whether our own marketing efforts are successful. In this practical and easy to understand session, you will gain insight into utilizing website analytics software (Google Analytics) to quantify and improve the success of your media buys, organize and streamline your content and navigation, and boost the overall online experience for your patrons.

Option 3: The Other 65 Percent: Re-Crafting the Patron Experience by Marti, Lead Arts Consultant and 2EO of Next Generation Consulting

Of all the time your patrons spend to attend your next performance, only 35% is spent at your venue engaging in your exhibit or performance. What about the other 65 percent? In this session you will get guidance on how you can leverage the  Patron Experience Audit Tool that NGC uses to analyze the entire 5-Phase patron experience. You will learn how your organization can put the patron audit tool to use, brainstorm and discuss ideas to sharpen the patron experience using the "Think-Feel-Do" technique, and learn fresh ideas that positively impact your Net Promoter Score.

  • 4:00 - 4:45 PM: Ask the Experts (And Each Other) Here's your chance to ask questions, discuss ideas, and get feedback from a national group of smarties who are all trying to attract new and young audiences.
  • 4:45 - 5:30 PM:  In Summary: Two Lessons, Three Predictions and a Wild Card for the Arts by Rebecca Ryan

Rebecca Ryan and her team at Next Generation Consulting have been on the ground for five years in Indianapolis, discovering what younger patrons want from their arts experiences, and working side by side with arts professionals to deliver it. In this dynamic keynote, Rebecca summarizes the two most important lessons she's learned to engage next gen audiences, and makes three predictions, based on her keen eye for trends and the current state of our economy. (She is, after all, an economist.)  Despite the bad news swirling around the arts, Rebecca is bullish. In this presentation, she tells us why. Preview Rebecca Ryan in this four-minute video.

  • 6:00 - 7:00 PM: Next Audiences Summit Tweetup
