Sometimes we're IN the news, and sometimes we're MAKING news. Read all about it...
Author-consultant Ryan was the keynote speaker at the February 2009 Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner, and her appearance precipitated an effort to get feedback from residents on those measures and, subsequently, teams to address shortcomings. After-hours activities and a wellness atmosphere rose to the top of the list as needing improvement, and Growth Coalition Director Jessica Miller formed the first teams to concentrate in those areas.
Rebecca Ryan, an expert in generational differences who wrote Live First, Work Second, will appear via Skype at a community meeting July 27. The goal is to talk about the progress Hutchinson has made in becoming an attractive place for young professionals to live and to spur a community discussion about what the next steps should be. During Ryan’s first visit - as the keynote speaker at the 2009 Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner - she explained that communities across the world must compete for the young talent that will replace aging baby boomers. Competing, she said, means becoming a “cool” community where the up-and-coming generation wants to live.
Next Generation Consulting, which works with cities nationwide, has developed a set of metrics by which a city or region can judge whether it is attractive to young professionals. These include cost of living, lifestyle opportunities, availability of jobs and other factors.
Bill Goodman of KET (Louisville, KY) interviews Rebecca Ryan about her book, Live First Work Second, and about what cities can do to attract and keep a knowledge workforce.
